Dhal or Dal
A Dhal is one of the best lentil dishes around. This costs nothing (if you get it from a food bank). It costs a few quid if you're brave enough to walk out of the pub before you spend your rent. High in protein, low in fat, and just super tasty.
You need
-
2 cups of toor dal, or moong dal
-
1 large onion chopped
-
1 green or red chilli - chopped (get rid of the seeds if you don't want it too hot)
-
2 cloves of garlic crushed
-
Vegetable oil
-
Piece of broccoli
-
Some curry leaves if you can get them
-
1 Tsp coriander
-
1 Tsp cumin
-
1 Tsp turmeric
-
1 Tsp garam masala
-
1 Tsp ginger powder
-
1/2 Tsp chilli powder
-
1 tin chopped tomatoes
-
1 TBSP chutney
Do it
-
Cover the lentils/split peas with plenty of cold water and leave to soak for about 30 mins. Then rinse thoroughly under cold water.
-
Put them in a pot and just cover with water and a Tsp of salt. Bring to the boil and then simmer on lowest heat covered - stirring regularly.
-
Fry the onion, garlic and broccoli and chopped curry leaves in a little oil. Turn down heat.
-
Then add 1 Tsp coriander, 1 Tsp cumin, 1 Tsp turmeric, 1 Tsp garam masala, 1 Tsp powdered ginger, half Tsp chilli powder.
-
Let flavours develop for a couple of minutes then add tin of chopped tomatoes and a TBSP of chutney.
-
By this time the cooking lentils should be looking like a thick porridge. Add that to the fried, spicy mix and stir well. Taste and add salt pepper as required.
